This tropical moist deciduous forest in Southern India spans an area of 758 sq km and weaves into the tropical dry deciduous teak forest. A multitude of streams and “nallahs,” the most of which are seasonal, crisscross the area. A number of water pools, called locally as “dohs,” are visible here even though the Pench River dries up by the end of April. These pools serve as watering sites for the local fauna. The only significant water source during this dry spell is the Pench Reservoir in the park’s middle.
Cheetal and Sambar deer are frequently spotted in Pench feeding on the open areas by the side of the road and along the banks of rivers and reservoirs. In the Park, jackals can be observed looking for food. Wild dog packs of up to 15 or more have been spotted close to the Reserve’s Chhedia, Jamtara, Bodanala, and Pyorthadi sections. In the summer, gaur herds are frequently seen by streams and bamboo groves. Sloth Bears prefer the mahua and bel-dominated forest and live in the rocky places. Chinkara is a fairly rare species that can be found in the open spaces near the villages of Turia, Telia, and Dudhgaon.

The main draw of Bandhavgarh National Park is its large concentration of tigers. The renowned White Tigers of Rewa were first uncovered here. Leopards, Blue Bulls, Indian Gaur (Bison), Chausingha (Four Horned Antelopes), Spotted Deers, Sambar Deers, Exotic Boar, Sloth Bears, Fox, Jackals, Wild Dogs, and others are among the park’s numerous wild attractions. The Park is home to 250 different bird species and at least 22 different mammal species. The Ratel, Porcupine, Small Indian Civet, Palm Squirrel, Lesser Bandicoot Rat, Jungle Cat, and Striped Hyenas are some of the additional creatures that may be found at Bandhavgarh. Cobras, Kraits, Vipers, Ratsnakes, Pythons, Monitor Lizards, and turtles are among the park’s reptile residents. The rhesus macaque and the Hanuman langur are the two primate species that call Bandhavgarh home.
The Narad-Panch Ratra and the Shiva Purana both make mention of the Bandhavgarh national park as a hub of human activity and settlement over 2,000 years ago.
The earliest evidence of human occupancy is found in the sandstone caverns to the north of the fort, where there are many Brahmi inscriptions from the first century CE. The fort has been ruled by a number of dynasties, including the Maghas in the first century CE and the Vakatakas in the third century CE. From that point on, a number of dynasties, including the Chandela Kings, ruled over Bandhavgarh. Bandhavgarh remained the Maharaja’s private property after India gained independence from the British Raj until he donated it to the state in 1968 to create the National Park.
Poaching and hunting were controlled as the park was established, and the number of animals increased significantly. The 1986 extension gave the Tigers in particular the much-needed woodland they required to thrive.
